Dusty Payne, frontside swing, Portugal

When Supertubos is too big, there’s always somewhere to retreat to. And with the amount of holding periods and lay days the Rip Curl Pro, Portugal recently had, the 34 and those who document them had plenty of time to explore those corners. And, get ’em wired. “When everywhere else is 100 feet and windy this is one of the only places you can still satisfy your desires,” says Ryan Miller of the wave Dusty Payne’s surfing above. “Dusty and Julian (Wilson, who won the event) were the only two takers this day.”

Dusty eliminated Jordy Smith in round two of the event, but then met the unstoppable force (at that point of the event), Joel Parkinson, who Dusty was also rooming with. How better to shake off your loss than cutting loose in some wind slop?
